Hi! I’m Gerard.
We make handmade Wits out of Natural Fibre rope – a circle, a loop of rope, virtually indestructible, that anyone who was in a rowed boat may have seen.
Still used today, this is a historical souvenir of the fishery and of more sustainable times… …from the Dictionary of Newfoundland English: Wit (n): a flexible branch or root, or a rope, usually formed into a circle and used to hold the oar to the t’ole pin, to form the entrance to a lobster pot, etc.
We sell (and use some of the earnings to advocate for change!):
– single wits (no use, as you’ll row in a circle! and you can’t have “your wit” about you!);
– pairs of wits
– interlooped pairs of wits (great symbol of a strong bond between two people, good wedding gift: Two wit, to woo!);
– my Mom knit a few pair (Knit wits!);
– three-looped wits (Tripwits!);
– 5-looped (Olymp-wits!)
– the Mitchelmore (it’s a half-wit);
and we’re open to making custom wits (recently made a trefoil wit for a mathematician!). This is a cute, sturdy, conversation-piece product that makes a fun gift – great for corporate gifts, wedding party gifts, or for anyone whom you think needs to keep their Wits about them.
We use natural fibre rope and our philosophy is guided by our intent to rid the oceans of synthetic/plastic rope. Humans fished for eons with natural rope, then ruined the fisheries with rope so big it could tear up the sea beds. 75000 people in the industry in Canada and they all use synthetic rope. We advocate for outlawing it. In these crazy times, people need to keep their WITS about them!
