Kwe’! Teluisi Megan.
Live Textiles are naturally dyed, handwoven, and finished by hand by myself, Megan Samms in my studio in rural Ktaqmkuk at the Ketalisk Sipu (Codroy Valley, Newfoundland) — near the house, I came up in and where I learned to spin yarns and knit them together as a youth. Nowadays, I design textiles and weave together carefully considered fibers after applying natural dyes to them. Due to the nature of this method of producing color, my palette is seasonal. I grow and forage plant dyes from the land around my dwelling, from our garden and the bush. My mum, Renée Samms, works along my side expertly sewing and tenderly finishing many pieces before they make their way out into the world — with the same care she has shown me for my whole life.
My intent is to integrate usefulness, beauty, tradition, and a sense of shelter in a living cloth; a craft that is meant to bring comfort and joy through the generations of the families they belong to, changing along the way, maturing and developing a life of their own. Live textiles.
We also have a small farm with heritage chickens, honeybees, cut flowers, herb, produce, and self and body care products. Our farm services Codroy Valley and area and is called Katalisk Sipu Gardens.
