OUTPORT Hi guys! It’s great to meet you! Can you tell us a bit about how you came to run Indian Falls Chalets?
SHAWN This property has actually been in my family for years, and we pretty much grew up here! We had a cabin where we used to stay on the weekend, and we’d go snowshoeing and fly fishing. It’s such a pristine spot, and we always planned to retire here. Then we got to thinking that it would be the perfect place to put rental properties – and in 2018 we opened the chalets.
OUTPORT You have three guest chalets, and they all look absolutely stunning – but I was wondering if you have a personal favourite?
MICHELLE They are all gorgeous! We have one forest chalet, and two that are riverfront – so it depends what kind of stay you’re looking for. Personally, I think my favourite place is on the deck of Dreaming the Dream because it has the best view of the falls. You can really just get lost there – it’s so peaceful.
OUTPORT But it’s not just accommodation you offer – it’s experiences, too? You have a very lively roster of outings and activities to choose from year-round . . .
MICHELLE We do! We offer snowshoeing, guided snowmobiling, winter campfires, and rabbit hunting, to name a few. Our “fire and ice” option is a totally unique sensory experience that we can’t recommend highly enough. It’s a guided nighttime walk (we provide headlamps) that follows the rushing river through the crunchy snow, down to the floodlit falls, and back to the crackling fire pit where we serve hot chocolate, marshmallows, and toasted bannock with molasses! And of course, if you you can always BYOB. And if you’d rather do your exploring in the daytime, you can get up early and hit 100km of groomed snowmobiling trails. Stop for lunch in one of our warm-up shacks and enjoy cups of hot tea and sandwiches.
OUTPORT What a treat! Toasted bannock sounds particularly delicious. And speaking of delicious – you also run a smoked salmon workshop (and I’m told you have the best smoked salmon around)!
SHAWN That’s right – best enjoyed on crackers next to the campfirewith a glass of wine! We also sell local jalapeño jelly and Newfoundland Salt Company sea salt, in case you want to spice things up.
OUTPORT So while we’re snuggled up by the campfire, indulging in locally smoked salmon, where are the kids?
MICHELLE We actually have a fantastic sliding hill on-site for kids! Lots of options for families, couples, and solo vacationers. We also have a special “Girls Getaway” package on at the moment, too.
OUTPORT I guess you’re seeing lots of staycationers this year, compared to other years? Have you seen a big shift in business?
MICHELLE Yes, for sure. But we’re lucky in that we have an ideal set up to accommodate these challenges. Our chalets are all independent of each other (no lobbies or hallways) so it’s easy for bubbles to distance. Many of our experiences are outdoors, and we even greet and help our guests register outside, so they don’t need to step into any communal spaces like they would in a hotel. All of our rooms are carefully cleaned, and not re-entered by staff after they’ve been properly sanitized. We’re excited about the upcoming year, and hope to welcome lots of staycationers!
